About Liam Birchley

Liam grew up in Brisbane and at the completion of Grade 12 studied animal husbandry and production at Longreach Pastoral College. He then enjoyed on-the-job training at Turangga Stud in the NSW Hunter Valley, and from there he went on to work in New Zealand at Trelawney Stud, the birthplace of Tulloch and eight Melbourne Cup winners.

Following this position Liam then took up a role as Foreman with Brian Mayfield-Smith at Rosehill, where they won three straight training premierships.

From working at Rosehill Liam then travelled to California to work as Assistant Trainer in Neil Drysdale's stable at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park, and oversaw the care of horses such as A.P. Indy, Rahy and Fusaichi Pegasus.

Liam states that his time in these roles allowed him to understand the racing industry from all perspectives, with knowledge and training strategies gathered from different countries.

On return from California in the early 1990’s Liam started his training career in Sydney and quickly enjoyed success with Striking Gold (AJC Summer Cup) and Furacao (Kindergarten Stakes). Liam was quickly approached by Bill Mitchell, who enticed him to come back ‘home’ and take charge of his Brisbane stable. While Liam was there the stable enjoyed much success, including the G1 Doomben Cup and the Grafton Cup.

In 2012 Liam decideed it was time to go out on his own and train in his own right at Eagle Farm.
